• Appreciation of the capabilities and limitations of a wide range of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques
• Training and qualification of staff for NDT
• Inspection qualification
• Ultrasonic inspection of austenitic materials
• Quality assurance: QA systems and audits
• Technical writing and presentation: production of written reports and articles, presenting papers at conferences and seminars
• Use of PC productivity tools: Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, email, internet and web authoring tools

Managerial:

• Building networks, forming coalitions, persuading staff with a wide range of interests to work together
• Managing change, questioning usefulness of habits and traditions
• Supervision of staff and contractors, matching resources to needs
• Setting and controlling budgets both for internal resources and for external spends
• Selection of contractors, writing of specifications and requests to tender, assessment of tenders, management of contracts
